Pathways at Hendrick provides palliative care to patients in the hospital. Palliative and supportive medicine care is a recognized medical specialty focusing on comfort, care and planning for patients and families facing serious illness. Such patients may need help with pain relieve or other upsetting physical symptoms. The patient and family may need help emotionally adjusting to illness, help exploring goals of care or help planning for the future.
Palliative and supportive medicine is not the same as hospice. Patients seen by the Pathways team are often also receiving treatments designed to fight the serious illness or injury. After all, one of the best ways to palliate, or relieve, symptoms is to improve the primary disease.
Services provided by Pathways at Hendrick are usually covered by insurance but are always provided when needed, regardless of the ability to pay.
