Tips for a keeping your health-focused New Year’s resolutions

The beginning of a new year often inspires individuals for a fresh start. For millions of Americans, focusing on health and well-being typically rank in the top five resolutions each year. Whether it’s losing weight, improving fitness, eating better or simply feeling more energized, the desire to improve health is universal. However, keeping the resolutions can be challenging.

Hendrick Health wants to help you successfully maintain your resolutions. Knowing how to set goals is often the key to keeping them throughout the year.

  • Set a specific, achievable goal. Rather than vowing to lose a significant amount of weight or adopt a completely new fitness routine, break this up into smaller, more manageable steps. This makes it easier to stay motivated and track progress.
  • Track progress. Regularly monitoring progress helps to stay focused and measure achievements. Using a journal, health app or calendar to log workouts or meals can help boost morale and review progress.
  • Celebrate small wins. Celebrate progress even if it seems minor. Committing to too much too quickly can feel overwhelming and increase chances of quitting. Acknowledging these small victories reinforces positive behaviors, making it easier to stay committed.
  • Find a support system. A support system can include a workout partner, a friend that shares similar goals or a group that enjoys the same activities. Not only does a support system provide encouragement and accountability, but it can also offer motivation when challenges arise.
  • Learn and adapt. Everybody is different and one health plan may not work the same for two individuals. Pay attention to what works best for you, and follow accordingly. Additionally, find exercises that are enjoyable and more likely to be done consistently.

Successfully following through with a healthy New Year’s resolution is possible with determination and realistic, achievable expectations.

Hendrick Health wishes all a blessed and healthy New Year!
