Holidays are meant to be joyful times but sometimes organizing plans and buying gifts can lead to stress and burnout. Over the last decade, research has shown that stress can manifest itself both emotionally and physically, and long-term stress can cause the worsening of health problems, increased substance use, insomnia and other concerning issues.
Since a little self-care can be the solution to a merry holiday season, Hendrick Health is sharing five tips to reducing stress and enjoying the season.
Keep up healthy habits. Eating junk food and lounging all day can cause a feeling of sluggishness. Taking time to relax is essential. Continue healthy habits and stay active. Balance is key.
Create a budget. Whether for gifts, food or lodging, the holidays generally result spending more money than usual. To ease the burden of financial stress, plan ahead and create a budget. Be realistic when planning and always leave room for unexpected costs.
Say no when needed. Give yourself the gift of rest and know your limits. intake some time to recharge by taking a nap or meditating. Watching a festive movie can also be a great way to relax with family or friends.
Don’t lose sight of what counts. The holidays can be hectic and can cause individuals to be overcome with negative emotions. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember to focus on what matters most to you.
Lastly, know when to seek help. This may mean scheduling an appointment with a counselor or sharing feelings with a friend. Leaning on someone else during trying times can make dealing with stress easier, no matter what time of year.
Hendrick Health wishes you and your family a merry, stress-free Christmas and a happy New Year.
