Hendrick Hospice Care has earned the highest rating possible from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), putting Hendrick in the top 11 percent of hospice providers across the nation. This achievement means that out of the 2,046 hospice providers measured across the nation, only 229 earned the top ranking.
On the state level, Hendrick Hospice Care is among the 18 of 159 hospice providers in Texas to earn the highest 5-star rating.
“To have CMS validate our 5-star rating based on the care experiences of our patients and their families is an absolute honor,” said Karen Tucek, director for Hendrick Hospice Care. “This recognition demonstrates our hospice team’s compassionate, patient-centered care that is focused on attention to detail and quality improvement.”
The latest CMS star ratings are based on eight quarters of data from CMS’s family caregiver survey between October 1, 2020, and September 30, 2022. CMS publishes hospice data on its website to provide useful information when consumers are seeking local hospice care. The survey measures eight major categories, such as getting timely help, treating the patient with respect and willing to recommend the hospice provider.
Hendrick Hospice Care is a nonprofit and the oldest hospice in the area, serving Abilene and a
65-mile radius since 1983. Hospice care is provided at Hendrick Hospice Care Center and in homes, nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and hospitals. The hospice team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, support staff and volunteers. Bereavement services also are available, such as Camp Courage and Club Courage for children.
“Each member of our team sees hospice care as an extraordinary ministry when families call upon us to be part of a loved one’s end-of-life journey,” Tucek said.
