With extreme winter weather in the immediate forecast, being prepared is the best way to keep you and your family healthy and safe.
Home
- Gather enough food, water and medical supplies to last at least three days.
- Have a 7-10-day supply of prescription medications on-hand.
- Be prepared for power outages with emergency light, alternative heat and backup power sources. Use battery-powered flashlights or lanterns rather than candles. Use generators and other appliances safely. Make sure battery operated cell phone chargers are charged.
- Protect your pets, livestock and other property.
- Eat well-balanced meals, and avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks.
- Stay indoors during extreme cold weather. Make trips outside as brief as possible.
- Wrap any exposed water pipes.
Travel
- Check the forecast and road conditions (Drivetexas.org). Adjust your schedule, if necessary.
- Fill up your vehicle with at least a half a tank of gas.
- Dress for the outdoors even if you don't think you'll be out much.
- Prepare a car survival kit in case you become stranded.
Clothing
- Layer with loose fitting, lightweight clothing.
- Outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellant.
- Wear a hat to prevent body heat loss from the top of your head.
- Wear gloves or mittens and rubber soled shoes.
