As children head back to school, vaccinations should be at the top of parents’ checklist. August is National Immunization Awareness Month and Hendrick Health is highlighting this annual observance by reminding everyone of the importance of getting recommended vaccines throughout their lives.
“Vaccines are safe, effective and the best protection against the spread of disease,” said Rob Wiley, a pediatrician at Hendrick Health. “As parents, following the recommended immunization schedule is one of the most important things we can do to protect our children’s health.”
Immunizations provide the power to protect against serious diseases, like whooping cough, pneumonia and cancers caused by HPV, through on-time vaccination.
“Whether it’s a baby starting day care, a toddler starting elementary school or even a teen going to college, parents should be sure their child’s immunizations are current,” said Wiley. “For vaccines to be most effective, vaccination rates must remain high.”
Individuals should talk with their doctors, nurses or healthcare providers to ensure the entire family is up to date on recommended vaccines.
