Back-to-school checklist for children with asthma

Back-to-school checklist for children with asthma

Every parent wants to equip their children with the right tools for a successful school year. For parents of children with asthma, a little more preparation can be the key to successful asthma management.

Hendrick Asthma Educator Susan McQuade recommends the following tips for parents:

  1. Meet with the school nurse to discuss all medical forms including an updated asthma action plan and signed consent form if the child is allowed to carry his/her inhaler. Make sure to take breathing treatment equipment to the nurse.
  2. Check expiration dates on all medications, and renew if necessary. Ask your child’s physician for an extra quick-relief inhaler to store in the school clinic.
  3. Schedule a flu shot.
  4. Talk with your child’s teacher to explain how asthma affects your child and ways the teacher can monitor and help.
  5. Meet with physical education teachers to discuss possible signs and symptoms your child may experience with exercise-induced asthma.
