Every parent wants to equip their children with the right tools for a successful school year. For parents of children with asthma, a little more preparation can be the key to successful asthma management.
Hendrick Asthma Educator Susan McQuade recommends the following tips for parents:
- Meet with the school nurse to discuss all medical forms including an updated asthma action plan and signed consent form if the child is allowed to carry his/her inhaler. Make sure to take breathing treatment equipment to the nurse.
- Check expiration dates on all medications, and renew if necessary. Ask your child’s physician for an extra quick-relief inhaler to store in the school clinic.
- Schedule a flu shot.
- Talk with your child’s teacher to explain how asthma affects your child and ways the teacher can monitor and help.
- Meet with physical education teachers to discuss possible signs and symptoms your child may experience with exercise-induced asthma.
